New York Application Directives enables you as a tutor in New York State to pinpoint the subjects, grades, levels and standardized tests you can teach, select the locations in which you'd like to give lessons and determine the supporting documents you need to submit.

A-1 All Subjects At-Home Tutoring Service® is a leading tutoring service in New York State. We advertise in yellow page directories and the internet to attract potential clients. As a result, we're inundated with calls from people seeking help to solve their educational problems.
When prospective clients call us, we discuss the problems which caused them to seek help. If someone decides to use us, we select a tutor to whom we give full particulars of the case.The tutor then promptly contacts the parents to set up a mutually convenient first appointment.
Here's the philosophy our tutors MUST embrace. Many people view a tutor primarily as someone to help students do homework and prepare for tests. This is NOT our view! We want our students to learn, understand and master their courses. Accordingly, the tutor always begins the first lesson with a comprehensive diagnostic test to assess the student and determine where to begin. After evaluating the test, he begins work on the topics shown by the test to be where trouble began. He concludes the lesson by informing the parents about the extent of the student's problems and how many hours per week he'll need to overcome them. He devotes the following lessons to thoroughly teaching all material the diagnostic test showed to be problematic. If this involves teaching topics covered months ago, so be it. During each lesson, he writes up extensive notes, methods, definitions and model problems, and assigns ample written and study homework both to practice what's been newly taught and to review material from previous lessons. As you can easily see, we regard our tutors as professional teachers. WE WORK ONLY WITH TUTORS WHO PLEDGE TO FOLLOW THIS PHILOSOPHY.
It's a pity so many people say one thing while meaning something else. As you'll quickly learn, we don't operate this way! When we make a statement or promise, we literally mean it. In fact, some tutors have gotten angry when they discovered we actually meant literally and word-for-word everything we said and expected their full compliance.
Since our reputation is of paramount importance, we don't tolerate actions which hurt our good name. If you become one of our tutors, you'll quickly learn we're always guided by the highest possible standards of professionalism and integrity in our dealings with parents, students and tutors. For example, we're scrupulous about keeping all promises we make to clients and tutors. Likewise, we expect our tutors to follow these same high standards of professionalism, integrity, maturity, honesty and common sense with us and our clients.
We place our students only with tutors who've won our absolute confidence and pledged to act at all times with total professionalism and integrity. Always take us completely literally at face value. Don't read between the lines. Don't interpret what we say in the mistaken belief we really mean something else. In fact, we mean and stand behind every single work and sentence we utter, whether orally or in the form of a letter, essay, pamphlet, booklet, web site or some other publication. So, our tutors must know all our procedures and fulfill their commitment to follow them. In short, we always try to treat our tutors as professional, mature, reasonable, intelligent, responsible people and we expect them to reciprocate.
Since our tutors are independent contractors and not employees, they're free to obtain students on their own or from other services. We don't withhold Social Security, Federal and other taxes. We're only required to report annual earnings over $600 on 1099 form. Payment of any taxes due is solely their responsibility. We pay a very competitive hourly rate for tutoring. Incidentally, we don't reimburse tutors or ANY expenses, such as tolls, travel, parking, materials, telephone calls, postage, etc. However, if you keep careful records, you can use them as income tax deductions. Also, almost all our tutors have full time jobs and, therefore, see our students afternoons, evenings and weekends.
In the Geographical Area Availability section, write a detailed list of specific Zip code numbers in which you're willing to give lessons. (Write ONLY numbers; DON'T write neighborhood or section names such as Greenpoint, Bensonhurst, Bayside, Riverdale or Tottenville), You'll find zip code maps in yellow paper directories available at the public library and in Hagstrom's New York City 5 Borough Atlas available at most book and stationery stores. If you're willing to go to any street or building without exception within a particular zip code, include it. If there's ANY street, block or building within a particular zip code to which you won't go, DON'T include it. If you're willing to tutor students in your home, write Home immediately after the area in which you reside. WE'LL REJECT YOUR APPLICATION IF YOU DON'T PROVIDE A COMPLETE AND DETAILED LIST OF ZIP CODE NUMBERS FOR EACH AREA IN WHICH YOU WISH TO TUTOR.
Since it's quite difficult to find students for tutors who work in just a few zip codes, we require you to select a minimum number of zip codes for each borough in which you'd like to tutor. These minimums are at least 18 zip code numbers in Brooklyn, 12 in the Bronx, 25 in Manhattan, 30 in queens and 8 in Staten Island. WE'LL RETURN YOUR APPLICATION IF ANY OF YOUR ZIP CODE LISTS IS TOO SMALL.
We'll hold you to your zip code selections. If you refuse a new student in one of the zip codes you chose because his neighborhood is too far, unsafe or inconvenient, we'll immediately change your status to inactive until we receive revised zip code lists from you. So, choose your zip code numbers carefully and accurately.
You MUST know exactly how to find a new student's home before you set up the first appointment. It's completely unprofessional to be late or not show up because you got lost. To avoid this, buy copies of Hagstrom's New York City 5 Borough Pocket Atlas, Hagstrom's Nassau County Pocket Atlas, Hagstrom's Suffolk County Atlas, Hagstrom's Westchester County Pocket Atlas, Hagstrom's Bergen/Passaic/Rockland County Atlas, Hagstrom's Fairfield County Atlas and Hagstrom's Union/Hudson/Essex County Atlas which make locating any house in the greater New York City area a snap. With these books, getting lost is a thing of the past; they are truly indispensable aids for any tutor.
While we DON'T require you to have a teaching license or certificate to become one our tutors, we DO require you to be a college graduate with at least one college degree under your belt and exhibit a depth of maturity and poise in your bearing. Also, we welcome you to tutor subjects, grades, levels and standardized tests outside the scope of any licenses, certificates and prior teaching experience you may have. Keep in mind private tutoring doesn't involve any of the classroom management techniques taught in education courses or used by classroom teachers. All that's involved is getting the appropriate course material from your mind into the mind of the student sitting next to you successfully and effectively. For instance, if you can teach reading comprehension or English writing skills at the 4th or 5th grade level, you can most likely teach these same subjects at the junior high school, high school or remedial college level; they differ only in the complexity of the materials involved.
How do you know you're qualified to tutor a particular subject, grade and level? You must meet ALL seven conditions detailed below. How do you know you're qualified to tutor a particular standardized test? You must meet ALL four conditions detailed below. How can you learn out the exact course content, syllabus and test format for a particular subject, grade, level and standardized test? Consult the titles, bookstores and publishers listed below. What subjects, grades, levels and standardized tests are in greatest demand? Carefully read the following paragraphs.
There's great demand for tutoring in all levels of high school math. Virtually all New York high school students take Sequential Math 1 in 9th grade, Sequential Math 2 in 10th grade and Sequential Math 3 in 11th grade. If you'd like to tutor these courses, know the New York City syllabi and standards as well as the format and content of the applicable New York State Regents exams and can do an excellent job teaching all topics and problems, write Seq1-3 on the Math: line of your application. Some students take Precalculus and Calculus. NOTE: You must actually know and possess the current Barrons Regents Exams and Answers in Sequential Math Course 1, 2 and 3 guides; otherwise, we CANNOT use your services as a tutor for Sequential Math 1-3.
There's great demand for tutors of grade 1 to 8 math. The grade 1 and 2 syllabus usually includes whole number addition and subtraction, grade 3 whole number multiplication, grade 4 whole number division, grade 5 fractions, grade 6 decimals, grade 7 percents and grade 8 basic algebra. We receive a great many calls for help in preparing to take standardized tests such as the PSAT, SAT, GED, GRE, NTE, TOEFL, LSAT, ACT, AP, GMAT, MCAT, ASVAB, RCT, and COOP as well as entrance exams for private schools and special public high schools. You can obtain excellent preparation books for each of these tests from the Barron's Educational Series. If you thoroughly know the course material and format of any of these tests and can effectively prepare students to take them, write their names on the appropriate lines of your application.
With all this in mind, write all subjects, grades, levels and tests you wish to tutor in the Subject Availability section. Since you must be specific and exact in filling out this section, include a specific subject, grade and level ONLY IF EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THE FOLLOWING SEVEN CONDITIONS IS MET:
For each high school level course, you must know the format of any applicable Regents exam, HAVE ACTUALLY EXAMINED AND OWN recent past exams and be able to prepare students for it.
In addition, write the names of any standardized tests you'd like to teach, with which you're thoroughly familiar and for which you can effectively prepare students. Include a specific test ONLY IF EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THE FOLLOWING FOUR CONDITIONS IS MET:
The material, syllabus and standards for each course must be in your head, not in a notebook or on a piece of paper. Here's an analogy. Suppose three drivers have to drive from point A to point B in Brooklyn. The first one doesn't know Brooklyn and gets lost. the second one makes the trip using a map and written directions. the third one knows Brooklyn like the back of his hand and can get from point A to point B by just driving without any written or printed aids. You must know each subject, grade, level and test you wrote on the application as well as the third driver knows Brooklyn.

This section calls for you to list the days and times you expect to be available to tutor our students. Remember, you must be available to tutor our students at least ten hours per week. However, keep in mind all appointments exclusively follow the wishes of the client and tutor. This means it's perfectly alright if you and a client agree to work together on a day and time not listed among your expectations.
This section calls for you to list up to at most four colleges and universities you've attended. For each one, write the name of the institution, what major subject you studied, the starting and ending dates of your period of enrolment and what degree (if any) you earned.
This section calls for you to list up to at most four employers for whom you worked. For each one, write the name and address of the employer, the starting and ending dates of your period of employment and your job duties.
